Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking OB/Gyn Laborists/Hospitalists to join a newly formed section within one of the most dynamic Labor & Delivery units in the Southeast. With 5,700+ deliveries annually and a goal of reaching 7,000, VUMC’s L&D serves as the regional referral destination for complex obstetric patients from community hospitals throughout Middle Tennessee.
“You get to do very cool medicine in an environment where there is always someone to call for help. You are NEVER working alone.” — Dr. Jody Stonehocker, Section Chief
Position Highlights
- Shift-based model with no call: 14 shifts/month averaging 12 hours each, with a mix of days, nights, and weekends. Extra shifts compensated at $2,000/shift. Part-time candidates considered.
- Rotate across three roles each shift: (1) L&D primary attending, (2) L&D night coverage, or (3) Inpatient Gynecology “Attending of the Week” — 7 consecutive days covering inpatient gyn consults, transfers, and emergent gyn surgery.
- You are never alone — MFM in-house during the day and available by phone at night; midwives cover high-risk OB and intrapartum obstetrics so you can focus on the most complex patients; world-class subspecialty backup always on campus.
- Exceptional clinical variety: complex obstetric patients from a deeply diverse population including refugees and resettled communities, rural catchment areas in Kentucky and Alabama, transplant patients, and patients in the Firefly program (reducing opioid addiction and suicide mortality in pregnancy).
- Active quality initiatives including primary C-section rate and a new hypertension in pregnancy management program launching this summer in partnership with OB cardiology.
- Collegial, supportive team culture with near-perfect employee satisfaction scores, where holidays are split equitably, and someone is always willing to cover a shift.
- Faculty appointment at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with opportunities for professional development in education, leadership, and quality improvement — training courses actively sponsored by the department.
- Leadership opportunity available for the right candidate with prior hospitalist or laborist experience — OB Hospitalist fellowship preferred but not required.
